Hazel - Year 1

Welcome to Hazel Class.

Our class teachers are Mrs Dale (Mondays & Tuesdays) and Mrs Inwood (Wednesdays-Fridays). They are supported by Mrs Roa and Mrs Bignell.

Main Topics for 2024/2025

This year, Hazel Class will learn about Our School and Local Area, Oceans and Seas, Changes Within Living Memory, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. You will find more information about how each topic is covered in our curriculum maps, which are at the bottom of this page.

Hazel Weekly Timetable can be found at the bottom of this page. However, it may change due to special events or changes in the calendar.

Physical Education (PE)

Our PE days are every Wednesday and for the first half term, we have Forest School on a Tuesday, which is run by Mrs Callaghan. After October half term, Forest School will be replaced by a second PE lesson, meaning from November-July we will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Your child needs to come into school wearing their PE kit, which consists of a plain t-shirt, plain joggers/shorts and a plain jumper.  You can now purchase a T-shirt in the colour of your child's school team. Trainers are also allowed. Your child will stay in their PE kit for the whole day.  For Forest School, your child will need to bring a change of clothes (long-sleeved and weather appropriate), a waterproof coat and a pair of wellington boots.

Homework

Homework will be set every Friday, and will consist of a variety of Mathletics tasks, set of spelling words (written and on Spelling Shed) and a writing task. Please return the homework on Thursday so it can be checked.

We also have a homework Pick 'n' Mix that will run across a term. This consists of activities that are specifically linked to each subject area and the topics that the children will be studying that term. These activities have points allocated to each and the points will be totalled at the end of each term with children receiving either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award for their efforts.

Reading and Reading Records

We expect your child to read every day. Your child's reading record must be brought in every day to be signed. Reading is such an important part of your child's development so please prioritise this task. As the children are at the earlier stages of their reading journey, we ask that the children read their book twice before it is changed, to help their understanding of what they are reading. If they are ready, books can then be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Our Class Rewards

We have many rewards in Hazel Class, which consist of:

Class dojo points, Golden Globes, stickers and certificates every Friday. Our 'Tree of Success' winner of the week will go to have afternoon tea (a drink and cake) with Mr Haylock and Buddy the following Monday afternoon.

On Fridays, one child will take our class bear (Adventure Ted) home for the weekend.
