Physical Education
Intent
PE plays a pivotal role at Poverest Primary School. We intend for all children to access a wide range of high-quality and engaging physical activities both within the school day and through extracurricular activities. Our children will develop their knowledge and build on their own skills so that they are able to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We follow the National Curriculum and our skills' progression guidance ensuring that children:
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities within our school and with other schools
- lead happy, healthy active lives
- develop their own individual skills over time in a range of physical activities
Through our broad and balanced P.E curriculum, children develop respect, tolerance, collaboration, perseverance and understand the importance of inclusiveness. We also intend our children to have a strong knowledge of a healthy diet to support a healthy lifestyle as well as having a positive growth mindset.
Implementation
Each child receives two lessons of PE each week, which are carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities are covered. To ensure these lessons are creative, inclusive and engaging, one lesson a week is run by our specialised sports coaches. Mr Duffin leads the games and outdoor adventurous aspects of the P.E. curriculum and Mrs Johnson is our specialist gymnastics teacher, who also teaches dance, to ensure that all aspects of the P.E national curriculum are taught.
Our PE Progression Map ensures that the PE requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met from EYFS to Year 6 and that knowledge and skills are developed. We assess all children against every unit of learning at the end of each half term.
At Poverest, we emphasise t.he importance of inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. Therefore, we aim to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities with external coaches who work with the class teachers to teach specific sports skills, including lacrosse, tennis, golf and cricket.
Swimming is taught in year 6 in the Autumn Term and includes top-up swimming in the summer term for those who have not yet achieved their 25m badge.
Impact
Children at Poverest love their PE sessions and leave primary school having learnt and enhanced their skills in a wide range of games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor adventure activities and individual sporting events such as tennis, golf and cross-country. Health and fitness circuits are also taught, so children can continue these independently in their teenage years and beyond.
Children experience the competitive side of sport and many children experience participation in events with other children locally, whether through sporting fixtures or in running events such as the mini-marathon and the Bromley Schools cross-country. Our lacrosse team made it to the national finals last year, which shows how well we have developed this area.
