Issue 5

This week we have continued with our SEN surgeries in school. This is where the teachers and the SEND team meet to discuss the children who need or may need extra support to achieve in school. We are proud of the progress that all our children make in our school and especially those for whom it is much more challenging to reach National Standards of attainment.

Our new, exciting creative curriculum is being seen in school and the Year 6 cohort had a fantastic time at Shrek's Adventure this week, which supported their learning of fairy tales as part of the English Curriculum. It certainly inspired our children to write some grim tales!

I spoke to the children this week about our new school values and we played a game in assembly, where we discovered how we can demonstrate our values around school and outside our school. It is important our children understand the values and how they can demonstrate them in their actions. I'm hoping you may find your children a little more polite this week towards you!

Many thanks to the FOP for organising and supporting the bouncy castle this afternoon and raising much-needed funds for the school. Please do collaborate and decide your class reps and FOP reps for this year and complete the online form.

Year 2 and Year 6 had first aid training today which is something we do every year. As a first-aider myself I think it is very important as many people in the world are first-aid trained. The children learnt CPR as part of the session and hopefully, it will inspire them to keep updating their training as they go through their lives.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year Group focus of the week - Year 3

Year 3 have settled well into their new school year.

We have immersed ourselves into our English, History and Art with The Stone Age. In English, we have started our new text ‘The First Drawing’ using pictures to make predictions and giving reasons for our ideas. We then identified nouns within the text and wrote in role. We have researched and recalled facts about The Stone Age in History which made the text even more interesting!

In Art and Design, we have studied cave paintings from France, then used a variety of natural mediums - charcoal, turmeric, paprika and curry powder to paint our own designs on sand paper. Our classrooms did smell very fragrant!

In Science, we have been studying the topic ‘Movement and Nutrition’. This week we made our own model hand with working muscles and now understand about voluntary and involuntary muscles in our bodies.

We have continued to enjoy our learning journey. In Maths, we have learnt the Place Value of numbers to 1000. We have also looked at the number line, estimation along with ordering and comparing the numbers.

In Computing, we are developing our understanding of networks and identifying its various components. We have looked at how information travels from one device to another and deepened our knowledge of real world networks.

Spanish has been our absolute favourite as we are learning new words, greetings and building our vocabulary.

In History, we are developing our understanding that history is divided into periods. We have looked at sequencing timeline using BC and AD and beginning to develop a good understanding of chronological order.

In RE, we are building our understanding of personal world view and how it might change. We are also looking at similarities and differences between what people believe and comparing it with our own beliefs.

Year 4 Focus Week

In English, we have been reading the book Tuesday and basing our work on this text. We started by learning about the features of a newspaper article, and the children then created their own newspaper articles by focusing on a different feature every day and then putting these together at the end of the week. They reported on the mysterious incident that had happened in the book (flying frogs!) and produced some fantastic, informative newspaper articles!

In Maths, we have been learning about Place Value. We have partitioned numbers, estimated on a number line to 10,000 and found 1, 10, 1000 more or less. We have also compared and ordered numbers up to 10,000, introduced Roman numerals and rounded numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

In Science, we are learning about food and digestion. We recreated the process of digestion while learning about the different body parts involved e,g, oesophagus, stomach, intestine etc. We have also learnt about the features and functions of human teeth and even made our own teeth using Plasticine! In Art, we have been learning about using different pencils, tones and shading to create 3D effects in our drawings. In History the children had lots of fun exploring an online 3D model created of the houses at Skara Brae as part of our learning about the Stone Age, as well as learning about the Amesbury Archer.

What a lot of fun and learning we have had in Year 4 this week!

Friends of Poverest

Thank you to everyone who has joined us for our Bouncy Friday event! The FoP hope you all had great fun and thank you for helping to raise funds for our school.

Safeguarding News

Online social platforms and apps are increasingly used by children in primary schools despite having age restrictions for much older children. We do get children in our school upset by the actions and words used by other people on these apps. Many parents are often very shocked and embarrassed when they discover how their child has acted online towards their peers. As adults we all need to support and monitor our children to support them in the kind and sensible use of these technologies.

More photos of our 100% Attendance winners from last year. I said last week that it is very difficult to attain 100% so a huge well done to these children. Having attendance of at least 95% is key to success. This means missing no more than 10 days across a whole school year.  Our attendance has dropped this week with the autumn colds beginning to set in but as soon as children are ready to return to school they should.
