Issue 7

This week we have begun our learning for Black History Month. Every class has chosen an area of focus, whether this be a famous black person or a story supporting diversity. We do have a new curriculum and as we develop it this year we will ensure there is a fair and diverse balance of the people the children study. Myself and Mrs Wilson also met virtually with Imagine Me Stories who loan diverse books to school each month for the children to explore in their own class libraries. Reading is a big push for our school at the moment and it is very important to us that children see themselves in the books they read and explore.

At the beginning of the week, the children really enjoyed their Escape from Crow Castle experiences and there is more about that below. A huge thank you to Mrs Rautenbach for organising such a fun and inspiring workshop.

Our sporting activities have also started with Mr Duffin taking a group of cricketers to Kent County Cricket Club on Thursday and more on that is shared below.

Next week we have our parents' evenings where you will have the chance to talk about your child with their class teacher. These meetings are all around how well your child has settled into their new classrooms as well as looking at the areas your children are doing well in and if there are any areas of improvement. Education is very much around working together and we do need your help as parents to support with memory - especially around times tables, spelling and reading. Repetition is key to memory.

We also have two own clothes days next week - Thursday is wear green or something green for sustainability week. All week the children will be thinking about what they can be doing to live more sustainable lives - I am trying hard to make sure I turn off the light in my office when I leave! The own clothes day on Friday is for the Friends of Poverest (FOP) to help generate funds for the school and ultimately pay for many of the nice things children have access to in school.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Escape From Crow Castle

This week, the whole school took part in a range of exciting, immersive Reading workshops! The children arrived in the hall to find lots of different areas set up with backdrops, mysterious objects and riddles to solve.

On Monday, the children in KS2 and Provision were given the challenge of solving a variety of different clues in order to “Escape from Crow Castle”! They worked their way around the different “rooms” in the castle an2d used their reading skills to solve puzzles and riddles, find clues, unlock mysterious chests and crack secret codes. The words that they uncovered at every station helped them to solve the final clue and escape from the castle, and we’re happy to report that no child was left behind!

On Tuesday, the reception and KS1 children had a surprise visit from a dragon! They were amazed to see videos of the dragon exploring their classrooms as well as the Library Bus, and they were then given the task of solving clues in order to escape from the castle and banish the dragon! The children loved working in groups to read and solve all the clues and then finally finding the answer to getting rid of that pesky dragon. Thank goodness we are officially dragon-free now!

We hope that every child enjoyed this amazing experience and that it showed them just how much fun reading can be!

Year 1 focus week

Year 1 has had a busy start to the year. We have really enjoyed settling into our new classrooms and getting to know our new teachers. One of our favourite activities this year has been Forest School. We love going outside with Mr Duffin, exploring the Forest School area and taking part in new activities. When we go to Forest School, we always go to our base camp first. This is where we sit on logs which are in a circle, and we pretend there is a campfire in the middle. We always sit together first and talk about one of the main rules of Forest School, which is 'don't pick, don't lick'. Afterwards, Mr Duffin lets us explore the Forest School area for five minutes. We are always so excited to explore, to see what has changed and if anything has been added. We return to base camp and Mr Duffin explains our activity. We have used an insect key to help us learn the names of minibeasts around the woodland. We found woodhouses, slugs, spiders and even a millipede! We really enjoyed finding three different leaves at Forest School this week. Mr Duffin asked us to find a green, yellow and brown leaf. We talked about how the leaves felt and the noises each one made. We chose our favorite leaf, climbed to the top of the hill and waited for a big gust of wind before letting go of our leaves. We had to chase after our leaves to find out whose travelled the furthest. Mr Duffin also plays great games with us at Forest School. We love playing hide and seek with our friends. We get to hide in the Forest School area whilst our friends count to 20. Afterwards, they have 1 minute to find us! It was such good fun. We also played another game with our hats or hoods. We took away our sense of sight by covering our eyes, we had to follow where our partners were standing based on their voices. We really enjoy Forest School with Mr Duffin and can't wait to see how the Forest School area changes.

Sports News

On Thursday children from years 5 and 6 took part in an indoor cricket festival at the County ground in Beckenham. The festival focused on the skills of cricket. Our children worked in teams to test their batting, bowling, throwing and catching skills. The event was organised by Kent County Cricket who we have worked closely with for over 5 years.

At cricket, we did lots of mini-games, for example, in one we had to throw it as fast as we could and it would be measured by a speed gun. During these experiences, we were split into a year 5 and year 6 group. There were all types of different games including games which tested your balance with a ball, some that tested how accurately/fast you could bowl/throw, others tested how fast you can hit the ball with a bat and last but not least it would test your reflexes. It was very enjoyable.
