Issue 17

Well done for braving the cold weather this week, thankfully it is likely to be a bit warmer in the coming days albeit wetter! Year 2 had a wonderful trip to St Paul's learning more about the Great Fire of London - one of my favourite learning topics!

Reading has been a focus this week in our assemblies, discussing whether real books or e-books are preferred. Mrs Rautenbach also delivered our first reading cafe to year 2 parents and I was delighted to see how well-supported the session was and I sincerely hope you found it useful to help you at home to encourage and enjoy the reading experience with your child. I also attended the Bromley Headteacher's Conference and listened to a presentation about AI in education and what the future holds. The one thing that is still very much needed is the ability to read and explain what you would like it to do. Year 3 parents have the chance to attend the reading cafe next Tuesday at 2:30 in the canteen. Please do join us if you can.

Attendance remains a key priority for us as a school and I am pleased to see it improving. I introduced our new Attendance World Cup in assembly and the winning class will get a free school trip. Sometimes percentages can be misunderstood but a two-week holiday in term time means that your child will have missed 50 hours of learning new things and not everything is repeated. Having broken attendance (a day off every week or fortnight) means five hours of missed learning but they will also struggle to understand the work they do when they return because our lessons are taught in progressive sequences. The National data on poor attendance and the direct link to lower school results and even lower engagement with the world or work is very clear to see. Let us all help our children to get into good habits on school attendance.

Our club attendance dropped over the Autumn term but we do now have new options for Futsal and Karate. Please do support the clubs as with low attendance they won't continue. If payments are a struggle but you would like to attend, please contact us and we will see how we can help. Being part of extracurricular activity also has a positive impact on school outcomes just like attendance.

Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Focus Week-Provision

This week in the Provision we had our first joint Forest school with Mr Duffin. The children enjoyed exploring the Forest school area, playing hide and seek and learning how to care for the local environment.

In Ash class, we have been enjoying learning all about transport. We have been looking at transport through the ages and been experimenting with different waterproof materials in preparation of building our own boats.

In Maple this term, our topic is the Ancient Egyptians. Last week, we had a fantastic opportunity to join year 3 for the Ancient Egyptian workshop, where we learnt all about the Ancient Egyptians. In Art, we have started making scrolls and this week will be making our own paper.

I was delighted to present our first 3 reading badges to some children today. These children have all read at least 10,000 words of their Bug Club reading books. Well done boys!

Our Reading Ambassadors and Librarians have been very busy around school, helping children on the Library Bus and inspiring their peers to read, read, READ! We are so proud of them all!

Word Millionaires!

This week, there was great excitement around the school because the children received their Word Millionaire badges! We have introduced two brand new tiers this year - the children in KS1 can now earn a Bronze badge for reading over 10,000 words, a Silver badge for 20,000 words, or a Gold badge for reading over 50,000 words. In KS2 the children received Bronze badges for reading 250,000 words or more, a Silver badge for reading over 500,000 words, and the coveted Gold badge for reading a million words or more! It was great to see so many children receiving badges, and we hope that they’ll keep working towards earning those amazing gold badges!

What are we reading in Fig Class?

What are we reading in Fig Class?

The Firework-maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman

What Lila wants to be more than anything else in the world is a Firework-Maker! But firework-making is not just about being able to make Crackle-Dragons and Golden Sneezes. There is also one special secret: every Firework-Maker must make a perilous journey to face the terrifying Fire-Fiend! Not knowing that she needs special protection to survive the Fire-Fiend's flames, Lila sets off alone. Her friends, Chulak and Hamlet - the King's white elephant - race after her. But can they possibly reach her in time?

What do we think about it so far?

"It's exciting how Lila goes exploring and on lots of adventures!" - Maya

Special Event Year 2

Year 2 had a fantastic time visiting St Paul’s Cathedral this week. This trip taught us a bit more about the Great Fire of London and also showed us exactly where the fire took place. We got to role play putting out the fire, wear real leather firemen helmets and also smell special smelling pots of burnt wood to immerse ourselves in the experience.

After finding out about the Cathedral and learning about the tragic, historical events of the fire, we took ourselves outside to sketch the beautiful building itself.

It was incredible to even be in the amazing Cathedral but we were also lucky enough to have a candle lit for our school whilst we were there. How special for us all!

The teachers would like to say a HUGE thank you to the parent helpers for coming on the trip. We really appreciate all you did for us to make it such a smooth, enjoyable day.

Appointments

It can be very difficult to make appointments outside of the school day for your child. We also ask that you try your best to do so as this enables your child to not miss any of the vital education. However if you are not given a choice, please ensure you bring your child to school before the appointment and always bring them back afterwards.

Accelerated Reader

Our tracking system for 'free readers' is Accelerated Reader. Many children enjoy reading their own books but we can only track them and give awards if those books are on the system. This website allows you to search for books that are on the system - it is updated all the time. Of course children can read books that are not on the system but if they are it helps us ensure that we know they have understood what they have read.

Safeguarding News

It is very cold at the moment, but the benefits of fresh air and exercise are still a priority. At school, we will still take the children out for PE, Forest School and breaks when we can - even if it is for a shorter time. Please do ensure that children have jumpers, coats, hats and gloves to keep them warm whilst still benefitting from the fantastic learning opportunities that occur outdoors.
