Issue 21

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term. We've had a great week with attendance so let us all work together to keep this up and we look forward to our big attendance prize draws which will happen just before the Easter Break. A huge well done to Willow, Cedar and Oak who are at the top of our weekly attendance World Cup. The children are really enjoying the class competition each week to see who will win a class trip for free in the summer term.
This week has very much been about school improvement for the leadership team and myself. We were invited to a talk at the National Institution of Education on the best approaches to the teaching and learning of mathematics and I'm pleased to report we do most of what was suggested already. We also had our school improvement partner visit on Thursday. Her focus this term was around SEND and how we support and challenge our children with special educational needs. She left the school extremely happy with everything we are doing for our children and it is lovely to be recognised for the hard work and effort the staff put in which is over and above what is expected of them daily. A big thank you to Mrs Mills for overseeing this area and the staff involved in our visit this time around.
We also had our half-termly visit on Attendance from the local authority and it was great to share the improvement that so many families have made. I thank you all very much for getting your children to school even when at times that can be challenging.
The school football teams are playing plenty of fixtures at the moment which is lovely to see. Buddy and I enjoyed watching the girl's home game this week and will be out there to watch the boys play next week. Our PE and sporting clubs are a fantastic feature of our school. The gymnastics education has been a huge improvement this year thanks to Miss Johnson and it is a joy to watch the children improve their skills in this area. A huge thanks to her and Mr Duffin for all the arranging and planning they do to ensure our PE curriculum is as superb as it is.

Have a wonderful weekend

thanks,
Paul Haylock (Head Teacher)

Year 4 - Focus Week

What an exciting first week back it’s been in Year 4!

In Fir Class, the children were very excited to welcome their new class teacher, Mrs Masters! They've really enjoyed getting to know each other this week. Welcome, Mrs Masters!

In English, we continued to read the book Until I met Dudley, which we started before half term. In this book, Dudley is a very clever dog who explains how a wide variety of different household appliances work. This book has introduced the children to the format of explanation texts, and they have really enjoyed learning about how different machines work. The children also loved drawing and writing about their own inventions, writing letters to Dudley asking him to explain how different appliances work, and writing their own explanation texts.

In Maths we have started learning about fractions this week. The children have done brilliantly, exploring whole numbers and fractions, and counting in fractions as well as comparing them.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their first Forest School session with Mr Duffin this week! He took us all on a tour around the whole Forest School area, introducing us to the different sections and going over the rules for keeping the children safe whilst using these areas. The children loved exploring, and also played a fun game in pairs where one child had to cover their eyes using their hat, and the other child then had to lead them around the area. The child whose eyes had been covered then had to guess where their partner had taken them while they were blindfolded. We're looking forward to having regular weekly sessions and exploring even more.

In Design and Technology, the children have started to build a slingshot car. They created the chassis and launcher for their car this week, and will continue to design and make the body for their car over the coming weeks.

In Religious Education the children will be learning about different celebrations and commitment ceremonies this half term. Our first lesson this week was all about birth/naming ceremonies from different religions (as well as non-religious celebrations). It was so interesting learning about different rituals such as a Christian Christening or the Hindu Namkaran.

Our Science topic this half term is Sound and Vibration, so we started this week by exploring a wide range of instruments and objects, the sounds they make and how they produce these sounds. The children enjoyed exploring using the instruments in different ways to produce different sounds.

With such a lot of fun and exciting learning in just one week, we can't wait to see what the rest of this half term will bring!

We are taking part in The Big Plastic Count to create a positive change and build evidence towards what happens to our plactic waste.

Taking part is easy! Your child will be sent home with a Let's Count tally sheet f
rom Monday 11th until Sunday 17th, count as you throw. Record the different types of household plastic packaging waste you use in one week. This inlcudes plastic going in your bin and plastic out for recycling.

What not to count:

  • Don’t include: plasters, medication packaging, non-dairy milk/juice cartons, nappies, dog poo bags, plastic cutlery or period products.
  • We don't want to include plastic items that are used for medical or sanitary reasons, or by people with disabilities who rely on plastic items for independence. Also, we are not counting coffee cups or Tetra Pak, the plasticised cardboard material that many juice/milk cartons are made of.
  • Check out the Plastic ID Tool online to familiarise yourself with the kinds of plastics we’re counting up for this survey.

After Sunday 17th, you will be sent a class code to upload your data.

This generates school footprint based on your findings. These will be taken to the Government later in the year.

We can't wait to see your findings!
