March 2024

Issue 23

This week has been Science Week and the whole school has been busy doing lots of different science experiments and activities organised by Mr Smith. This included visiting the Wiggly Wild Show where the children got to see snakes, bearded dragons and lots of different insects. Please look on the Class Dojo pages for more photos and information about what the children have been doing including Year 6 visiting the Science Museum.

On our quest to be a sustainable school Mrs Thakur and our travel ambassadors have been promoting the ‘Sustrans Big Walk & Wheel’ to encourage everyone to walk, cycle and scoot to school and it has been lovely to see so many children joining in. Mrs Smith and our Eco Warriors continue their campaign to save the planet, starting with our school by signing us up to ‘The Big Plastic Count’. Thank you to everyone who has been counting their plastic waste and submitting their data. Once they have all of the results, we will be told how much would be recycled and what that means for our school and individual footprints? At the moment only 12% is recycled and this information will be used to continue the campaign for change.

There have been lots of different sporting competitions and events happening this week. On Saturday, some of our Year 3 children took part in the Cross Country competition and we came 3rd out of 49 schools. Mr Duffin and some KS1 children went to the Kent County Cricket Club on Monday. Children in Years 2-6 took part in gymnastics competitions on Tuesday and Wednesday with Mrs Johnson and our Bromley School football match on Friday finished the week. Even the teaching staff got involved with an orienteering staff meeting on Wednesday and skills from this meeting will be used with the children over the coming weeks.

We are very excited that a child in our school has been nominated for a ‘Bromley Police Good Ambassador Award’ and next week they will be presented with a certificate and prize in assembly. Please look out for this in next week’s newsletter.

Friday 15th March is ‘World Sleep Day’ and so I hope that you all get a great night's sleep and have a lovely weekend.

Focus Week- Reception

EYFS have had a great Spring term in Willow and Walnut and can’t believe we are halfway through our first year in school! We have explored our new topic ‘Habitats’ this half term and have loved exploring the Jungle, Ocean and Polar regions. We really enjoyed creating our own arctic scene based on our story ‘Be Brave Little Penguin’ and playing in our jungle and ocean role play areas. Our favourite memory of our Habitats topic was going to watch Migration at the cinema! We were all laughing at the ducks on their journey to Jamaica!  We also participated in our first World Book Day and loved showing all the adults our fantastic costumes during the school book day parade!

In our Maths lessons we have enjoyed learning all about odd and even numbers, number bonds to ten and all about height and length. We have also really loved enjoying our first forest school term, learning all about the different areas and exploring natural materials through a senses hunt and den building! We have been very brave at the Wiggly Wild Show where we held different animals! To finish off our Spring term we are really looking forward to hosting our EYFS talent show next week and show our adults how fantastic we are!

Aaron and Yesim's fundraiser for Friends of Poverest.

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are thrilled to share that we will be participating in the Brighton Marathon on April 7, 2024, to support a cause that is very close to our hearts - Friends of Poverest.

Friends of Poverest is an incredible charity that exists solely to support Poverest Primary School. As parents and members of the community, we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact this organisation has on the lives of the students.

The funds raised by Friends of Poverest are used to provide essential resources and experiences for the pupils throughout the school year. From educational tools to exciting field trips, every penny goes towards enhancing their learning journey.

But it doesn't stop there. Friends of Poverest also ensures that every child feels special and celebrated. They provide book gifts for children transitioning from Reception to Year 1, organise Teddy Bear's Picnic packs for fun-filled outdoor adventures, and even contribute towards Christmas decorations for a magical festive lunch.

As a registered charity, Friends of Poverest ensures that 100% of the funds raised directly benefit the school and its students. They work tirelessly throughout the year, organising events, seeking donations, and even partnering with employee fundraising matching schemes.

We are truly inspired by their dedication and commitment to making a difference in our children's lives. That's why we are reaching out to you today with an ask - please consider supporting us in this marathon endeavour by making a donation towards Friends of Poverest. Your contribution will go a long way in empowering these young minds and providing them with opportunities they deserve.

Together, we can create a brighter future for our children. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!
