Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn Term. We have had a wonderful first week back, which started with the unearthing of the time capsules buried in the Forest School Area 10 years ago. This happened during a live assembly - for those who remember the TV programme Time Team it was very similar! The items were cleaned and left on display outside my office for the children to explore during the week - a mini Poverest Museum! We have decided to re-bury the findings and bury a new time capsule containing items from the present day. During assembly on Friday, each year group shared what they were placing into the new capsule. We've all learnt that plastic survives a lot longer underground than metal, so items have been placed in more than one plastic packaging so that there is a greater chance of it surviving. Lots of the items found and the new items have created lots of discussion about the past and what the future might be like which has been excellent for all the children.
We had a visit on Tuesday from the Maths Mastery programme which we are now part of. We are developing our teaching of mathematics so that all children can truly master mathematical concepts and be confident in their mathematical thinking. Exciting times for our teachers to learn new ways of teaching mathematics so children find it easier in the long term.
A huge thank you to the Friends of Poverest and the teaching staff for the two Neon Discos this week. The children really enjoy these events and it is lovely to see them all have so much fun with their friends.
I met with the Parent Forum on Thursday and the minutes of the meeting will be on the school website next week. We discussed mobile phones in schools (which we do not use and will continue not to use), the school street (new clearer road markings will be happening soon) along many other items. On the topic of mobile phones, it is important we - as parents - monitor the use of them when our children get them. WhatsApp messaging does often get out of hand occasionally and we must all help to educate our children in the sensible use of WhatsApp. Time limits are another excellent thing to put on devices so children can enjoy traditional games away from technology, which are crucial elements of childhood.
Next week I will be spending some time at PGFL with the Year 6 children. A favourite time for me - the residential are such a fantastic experience for the children.
Have a great weekend.
