Issue 41

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn Term. We have had a wonderful first week back, which started with the unearthing of the time capsules buried in the Forest School Area 10 years ago. This happened during a live assembly - for those who remember the TV programme Time Team it was very similar!  The items were cleaned and left on display outside my office for the children to explore during the week - a mini Poverest Museum! We have decided to re-bury the findings and bury a new time capsule containing items from the present day. During assembly on Friday, each year group shared what they were placing into the new capsule. We've all learnt that plastic survives a lot longer underground than metal, so items have been placed in more than one plastic packaging so that there is a greater chance of it surviving. Lots of the items found and the new items have created lots of discussion about the past and what the future might be like which has been excellent for all the children.

We had a visit on Tuesday from the Maths Mastery programme which we are now part of. We are developing our teaching of mathematics so that all children can truly master mathematical concepts and be confident in their mathematical thinking. Exciting times for our teachers to learn new ways of teaching mathematics so children find it easier in the long term.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Poverest and the teaching staff for the two Neon Discos this week. The children really enjoy these events and it is lovely to see them all have so much fun with their friends.

I met with the Parent Forum on Thursday and the minutes of the meeting will be on the school website next week. We discussed mobile phones in schools (which we do not use and will continue not to use), the school street (new clearer road markings will be happening soon) along many other items. On the topic of mobile phones, it is important we - as parents - monitor the use of them when our children get them. WhatsApp messaging does often get out of hand occasionally and we must all help to educate our children in the sensible use of WhatsApp. Time limits are another excellent thing to put on devices so children can enjoy traditional games away from technology, which are crucial elements of childhood.

Next week I will be spending some time at PGFL with the Year 6 children. A favourite time for me - the residential are such a fantastic experience for the children.

Have a great weekend.

Focus Week - Provision

Since returning from the October break, the children in The Orchard have been working extremely hard and impressing all the adults. In Blossom room, the children have spent the week learning about Diwali. They have been fortunate enough to have taken part in many exciting sensory activities linked to the celebration and were lucky to try some of the traditions that take place during this festival of light. Blossom room also got a visit from the cheeky Gingerbread man! Whilst reading the story together, they were able to learn some fantastic maths and how to add one more. However, the Gingerbread man was not so lucky as the children were able to decorate some gingerbread biscuits and eat them, just like that sly fox from the story – poor Gingerbread man! Meanwhile in Mulberry and Damson room, a crime had taken place and a path of destruction was left behind! It was up to our special detectives to crack the case and search for clues. The children made some fantastic wanted posters searching for the terrifying beast and interviewed a member of staff who caught the monster escaping through the window with a piece of chocolate cake! The children cannot wait to dive into more learning next week and find the culprit!

The Friends of Poverest

Neon Disco's

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who helped at our Disco's over the last couple of days. The kids had a great time.

Notification for future events

The Friends of Poverest will no longer be able to take any last minute payments for any upcoming events. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make sure we have enough volunteers to child ratio, space, gifts and snacks etc. All events have a cut off date and this will be published in the advert for that event. All our events will be posted on dojo, in the newsletter and our Facebook page.

Please keep an eye out for information about our next event which will be the Christmas Grotto on Friday 6th December.
