Focus Week - Year 5
A Busy and Exciting Time in Year 5!
Year 5 has been full of fun and learning as we get closer to Christmas. We’ve had some exciting school trips and have been working hard in class too.
Our trip to London was a fantastic way to finish our History topic on the Tudors and Henry VIII. We met an actress playing Henry’s sixth wife, who told us all about how his wives lived, died, and made their mark on history. We also explored the Tower of London, where we saw armour from Tudor times and enjoyed some fun activities, including pretending to live in Victorian times. The children loved traveling by train and walking across Tower Bridge, especially since the weather was so lovely that day.
The next day was just as exciting, as we went to the cinema to watch Despicable Me 4. It was a nice break before assessment week and gave the children time to relax and enjoy themselves while learning in a different way.
Back at school, we’ve been working on lots of interesting topics. In Geography, we’ve been learning about deserts. We found out where deserts are located around the world and looked at what makes them special. One of the most interesting things was learning how salt flats are formed. In English, we’ve been writing stories based on a short film called The Wishgranter. We practiced describing characters using "show, not tell" sentences and used personification to make our settings more exciting. We also learned how to use short sentences for dramatic effect and added fronted adverbials to make our writing even better.
In Maths, we’ve started learning about fractions. Using manipulatives, we learned what fractions are and how to compare them. We also found out what improper fractions are and how to change them into mixed numbers. The children have been doing a great job explaining their ideas using clear maths vocabulary.
On top of all this, we’ve been working hard on our assessments. It has been a busy few weeks, but also a really fun and rewarding time for Year 5!
