It feels quite unbelievable that we have now completed the first half of the Spring Term. With so much happening in school, the time has flown by! We started this week with National Online Safety Day on Tuesday. All the children took part in special lessons highlighting various online risks and how they should manage them if they come about. The live lesson from the BBC was excellent as we ensure children have the skills to manage their own online activities safely. The key message at Poverest is always to tell a trusted adult about anything that worries or upsets you and we encourage you to have open conversations with your children and get involved in finding out what they are playing and who they are communicating with. Roblox is a very popular game amongst our children but Roblox is actually the host name for lots of different games which can be made by anyone and then hosted on their platform. It is worth knowing what game on Roblox they are playing and who they are playing with. The settings are crucial as you can prevent strangers from engaging in conversation with your child.
Willow and Walnut took their first walking trip as Poverest children this week to Waterstones at the Nugent Centre—a walk they will do often in their seven years. It is great for our children to build up their stamina for walking and also to practise good road safety, a vital life skill, on our busy roads.
The school football team had two fantastic matches this week with the Girls playing Edgebury at home and the boys away to St Marys. Well done to all involved and I know both Mr Duffin and Mr McManus were very proud of every player. On Thursday the senior leadership team observed English lessons across the school and once again were very impressed with both the quality of teaching and the excellent behaviour, engagement and effort from the children. Also on Thursday, we hosted a friendly Lacrosse tournament with other schools, it was great for our children to get some friendly competitive practice and enjoy playing Lacrosse.
Finally, we have had our celebration of learning this afternoon. The children love to show off their hard work to you their parents and carers and it is a great opportunity to see how you can reinforce the learning journey at home. Remember reading is the superpower all children need. Practising phonics and decoding in the first few years moving on to practising their comprehension of what they have read in the older years. Have a great half-term but do ensure your children spend a few minutes a day reading as a big push to help them read will make all other aspects of learning much easier for them.
We return to school on Monday the 24th of February all at the usual time. Tuesday 25th will be special as we join the tree-planting project on Tillingboune Green. If you want to join in yourself you must register on this external link as this is organised by Bromley and not the school.
