Issue 3

Dear All,

It's hard to believe that yet another year has flown by and how wonderful that we have returned to normality. It's been wonderful to see the children coming in and out of school for many external visits. Also welcoming in many external visitors to provide different learning opportunities whilst at school too.

I have loved hearing the many musical instruments being played around school and particularly the ukulele. Watching all the children who performed in Poverest Has Talent was incredible and combined with the children who took part in the Poverest Music Prize and the Year 6's in Matilda our school is overflowing with talent! And of course we performed in The Bromley Proms.

This year in PE our children have covered amongst other sports Football, Netball, Health and Fitness, Cricket, Lacrosse.

We were lucky enough to work with Lacrosse England who provided funding for a coach to come in and work with year 5. They began their Lacrosse lessons in November. In February we took 2 teams to a local competition. Mr. Duffin began teaching year 6 Lacrosse in PE. In May we hosted the Bromley Schools Lacrosse competition and finished 2nd out of 10 schools. This qualified us for the Southern finals in Battersea. We finished 6th overall which qualified us for the Nationals at Keele University. We finished 10th overall. How incredible is that!

In Tennis we’ve had weekly lessons with Park Langley and they’ve worked with Year 5 and 2. We had sessions to promote girls tennis and that was with every girl in key Stage two and from that we were invited to the National Tennis Centre in Roehamption, working with Judy Murray, Heather Watson and Johanna Conte. The girls received a sports pack with many things including water bottles and T-shirts and the school will be receiving equipment from this too.

In Golf we've been working with Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club for over 2 years. Every Monday our children attend an hour's coaching with the Golf Pros at Chelsfield. We entered a year 3/4 team into the tri golf competition and finished 2nd overall (out of 10 schools).

Cross Country. We have competed in year 3/4 and 5/6 events at Crystal Palace. All our children had plenty of practice having attended Cross Country Club at School.

London Mini Marathon. We had 47 children complete the London Mini marathon this April. The course was the final mile of the London Marathon and finished on the Mall.

Cricket. We have taken part in Bromley schools competitions as well as a league run by Kent County Cricket.

Football. The boys team have won the school league they played in across two terms. Both Boys and Girls teams have played more matches than ever before.

You know what they say “healthy body, healthy mind!”

Each year we have entered the Bromley Flower Fest and this year we won it for the most creative planter displaying our Poverest values. The planter was placed in Bromley High Street and many Bromley residents saw it and commented on what a beautiful one it was. We were also to be found in The Bromley Times sharing our success!

Every week there have been children going out to educational visits, visitors coming into school and a constant “buzz” of activity throughout the school which is so lovely to see and hear.

We heard at the Summer Fair that one of our children starts university in September to be a doctor and another to be a scientist studying blood! I couldn't be more proud.

Thank you for the kind words and many gifts for both myself and staff, we all really appreciate them.

Wishing you a very good Summer holiday and as I always say "Don't forget to keep reading and playing Maths games".

Lots of love Mrs. Weeks handing over to Mr. Haylock!

Reception

This Summer EYFS had a wonderful time exploring our Summer topics ‘Growing’ and ‘Habitats’! We had an amazing time learning all about life cycles and how animals and plants grow. We particularly loved watching our eggs hatch and grow from hatchlings to adorable little chicks. We were so excited to get to hold them and have them in our classrooms. During our growing topic we also had a wonderful time at Romshed farm and were so lucky to meet a newborn lamb and watch the sheepdog round up the flock. One of our favourite books that we read during our Growing topic was ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ which really came to life for us when our very own caterpillars turned up! We loved releasing them into our garden area with our friends from Riverside.

During our Habitat's topic we loved exploring the different habitats animals live in and making our own habitat shoe boxes. We particularly enjoyed getting messy during under the sea week when we role-played our own stories using slime! Our local area walk to the woods where we pond dipped in the River Cray was so much fun - we even managed to find a fish!

We worked hard on our moving up assembly and were very proud of ourselves for all of our achievements and the certificates we were awarded.

It has been an absolutely wonderful first year at Poverest where we have grown into the bright, confident young children we are today. We can’t wait for our next adventure as Hazel & Holly class!

Year 1

Year 1 have been extremely busy this term! The children worked incredibly hard in phonics lessons and excelled in the phonics screening; all the teachers were very proud! At the start of the half term the children also participated in Sports Day. All the children put 100% effort in and competed for their team despite the hot weather! In English this term the children have been writing their own fairy tales. Year 1 became illustrators and authors of their own books, and they did a fantastic job reading their stories to their peers. Year 1 have also read ‘Sidney, Stella and the Moon’. They solved the ‘Missing Moon Mystery’, designed missing posters and created their own fact file about the moon. In History, the children have been comparing the expeditions of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong’s moon landing (Holly and Hazel Class are now ‘moon experts’)! Year 1 have thoroughly been enjoying their computing lessons this term. They have been learning how to programme animations on a programme called Scratch Jr, this is a skill that they will continue to build on throughout the school. One of Year 1’s favourite days this term was the Smoothie Day! The children identified different fruits and vegetables, learnt where they grow and tasted a wide range of fruits and vegetables. The children were taught how to safely chop up the food and blend it all together to make delicious, healthy smoothies! We were very impressed as almost all the children had a go at trying new food! In PSHE, the children have been learning all about changes and how to cope with the different changes they might encounter. Year 1 are now ready and excited for what Year 2 has in store!

Year 2

The children in Year 2 have been very busy this half term! In English, we read The Dragon Machine, and the children enjoyed learning and writing about dragons. We also read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer and the children created their own inventions, just like Rosie does in the book, and then wrote about them. In Maths, we spent some time recapping everything the children had learnt throughout the year, including Position and Direction, Money, Addition and Subtraction. In Science, the children learnt about Scientists and Inventors such as Charles Macintosh, and we also learnt about the Environment and Sustainability. They really enjoyed learning how to sort recycling and thinking about ways they could save energy. In Geography the children learnt some basic skills such as finding directions using a compass, and in Design and Technology they created moving monsters using card and split pins to make linkages that could move. The most exciting event of all was our fantastic overnight trip to Frylands Wood! The children enjoyed a wide variety of activities such as grass sledging, pond dipping, archery, orienteering, disc golf, a blindfold trail, an assault course and more! They had a fun-filled campfire, complete with singing and roasting marshmallows, and then enjoyed sharing bunk beds in a room with their friends. They were all so independent and mature, and the adults were very impressed!

Year 3

Our English classes have been an absolute success, as we have completed not one, but two captivating books! One of which resulted in writing a cautionary tale in a rhyming scheme. We also used our imaginations for creating our own enchanting fairy tales. Furthermore, we explored the art of designing eye-catching leaflets to engage readers and communicate our ideas effectively. Lastly, we had a wonderful opportunity to participate in a reading café with a delightful beach theme, allowing us to immerse ourselves in a fun filled afternoon.
In our Computing classes, we have been acquiring valuable programming skills using Scratch. This allowed us to embark on an exciting journey of coding, and we have learnt new techniques to create interactive projects.
In Spanish, we have been actively expanding our vocabulary and learning some conversational skills. We have learnt new words and practised short sentences. We are proud of our progress.

Year 4

Year 4 has had a busy half-term. We have been on two school trips as part of our History project. The Chislehurst Caves and the Imperial War Museum. In English, we have been learning all about Ernest Shackleton. We have written job advertisements, learning to articulate and justify our opinions. Using synonyms to describe different strengths in a letter. Describing landscapes, using relevant adjectives in the description with a newspaper report about The
Endurance and her crew.

During English week, we planned and wrote our own twisted fairy tale using Jack and the Beanstalk as our starting point.
In Maths, we have learnt how to multiply and divide single, 2 and 3-digit numbers to two decimal places and by tenths and hundredths. We have found equivalent 1/100 and 0.01s and 0.01s,1/10s and 0.01s. We then moved on to mass and capacity. We have learnt to measure in grams and kilograms and about equivalent masses. We went onto comparing, adding and subtracting Mass. We then moved onto learning about capacity and volume in millilitres and litres.
In Science and Design and Technology, our topic this half term has been on Electricity. We have had plenty of activities learning about how to make circuits, designing and creating our own switch, what conductors and insulators are and designing a poster on the dangers of electricity.
As a cross curricular topic in Design and Technology, we have designed and made our own torch using a plastic bottle.
In History, we have continued to learn about World War 2. We have looked at the crucial ‘Battle of Britain’ and Hitler’s plans for invasion. We also learnt about the Blitz and the impact on evacuees. We explored the evacuation of Dunkirk and the ‘little ships’.
In Spanish, we have finished the ‘Mi Casa’ unit. In Computing, we have been learning about coding, scratch and designing our own game. In PSHE, we have been thinking about relationships. In Forest School, we have been tending and nurturing all the plants and watering them!

Year 5

Year 5 have absolutely loved their tennis this year and have really improved.  A few of the children were lucky enough to visit the National Tennis Centre and met some of our top tennis players, as well as having a hit with Judy Murray!  They have also enjoyed a trip to the Bromley Church Festival where they joined other schools in the area for craft, caring for our planet and team-building activities.

The favourite trip for the entire year (according to most of the children) was the BBC Earth Experience, which was an amazing interactive and immersive trip across all the biomes of the Earth.  Whilst lying on beanbags, the children watched the most incredible photography and were exposed to the absolute beauty of nature and our planet.

English Week gave us the opportunity to write our own fairytale and the quality of the children's writing showcased their readiness for year 6; some exceptional stories were also written based on the graphic book, Flotsam.  In geography, the children have been looking at climate change and carrying out experiments to test the greenhouse effect.  As part of this learning, we joined schools from all over the world, to celebrate World Ocean Day.  We have now met our year 6 teachers and are looking forward to our next adventure at Poverest!

Year 6

The year 6 production of Matilda the Musical was a highlight of this term and year overall, the children showcased their amazing talents in singing, dancing and acting. Each show was warmly received, and we received many emails and messages of congratulations from many members of the audience.

DT has been enjoyed by all the children this term, where they have coded Micro:bits to be used as compasses and designed the casing to keep the technology safe. Some children even adapted their coding to create a more developed navigational device.

The children did incredibly well during SATs week and as a reward visited Chessington World of Adventures, where everyone had a thrill seeking day, even managing to experience the new Jumanji rollercoaster.

Year 6 have had a brilliant time at Poverest and have achieved so much. We wish everyone in Year 6 all the best on their move to their new secondary schools. We know they will face this journey with all the values they have gained at Poverest.

Ash and Maple

Colchester Zoo, here we came! What an amazing trip to end the Year with! The children of Maple & Ash  absolutely loved learning all about the different animals around the world and their habitats.

Maple and Ash have also been working really hard on the importance of keeping healthy & how it affects our confidence and self-esteem. They have also been working hard on showing kindness and learning to play fairly. They are definitely ready for a well-deserved break!
